The turmeric rhizome is known as Indian Saffron since it is widely used as an alternative to the far more expensive saffron spice. The deep orange-yellow powder of turmeric rhizome is commonly used as spice in south Asian cuisines, taken as a dietary supplement and as coloring and flavoring agent.
As a dietary supplement, the turmeric is alleged to help with stomach problems and other ailments. It is use as an anti-inflammatory agent, as remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive disorders. A wide variety of skin creams is also developed from turmeric. It is also popular as a tea ingredient.
Its active component is curcumin.
